Working Hours: 40 hrs/week; Mon-Fri or Tues-Sat; 8am-4pm

This is a highly responsible and specialized clinical position providing solution-focused brief therapy on a short term basis, developing treatment and discharge plans that are tailored to meet the needs of the existing client, coordinates family meetings and facilitating groups with adults who are in a crisis for Mental Health and/or Substance Abuse. The Crisis Therapist is responsible for documenting services provided according to the program regulations. Employee works under the Clinical Director to receive assignments in terms of broad practice, precedents, policies and goals. Work is reviewed through records for fulfillment of program objects and for conformance with department policies, and practices, and state and federal regulations. 


Graduation from an accredited school with a minimum of a  Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling or some other relevant Human Services discipline. Preference for MA degree, preference for  CAP or licensure in the State of Florida.   Current valid driver’s license in the State of Florida.
  • Basic competencies to serve individuals with co-occurring mental and substance use disorders, including the ability to conduct integrated screening, develop treatment plans and provide coordinated care for individuals that present with co-occurring disorders.
  • Knowledge of mental illness, emotional disturbances, addiction and co-occurring disorders, therapeutic techniques, psychotropic drugs, clinical assessment process, treatment planning, individual and group therapy.
  • Ability to assess and monitor clients’ progress, formulate and facilitate realistic and well-documented measurable goals and objectives and discharge plans.
  • Ability to perform general clinical supervision of other staff members, interns and volunteers.
  • Ability to plan and develop educational and informational programs.
  • Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with client, co-workers, professionals, the general public, and other service agencies in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, including the telephone, computer, copy/fax/scan machine.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to learn and develop skill with the use of agency electronic systems, including financial/timekeeping tools, web-based training modules and the electronic health record.
  • Knowledge of mental illness, emotional disturbances, addiction and co-occurring disorders to effectively provide therapy and treatment techniques appropriately.
  • Knowledge of the principles of leadership.
  • Knowledge of the basic principles, methods, practices procedures of behavior management.
  • Ability to effectively train and monitor the work of others.
  • Ability to conduct individual and group therapy, in-services, and trainings.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle to transport clients and perform essential functions of the position.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to interact appropriately with verbally and/or physically abusive and aggressive clients and utilize the Mandt System to ensure the safety and well-being of the client, other clients and fellow employees.
  • Ability to communicate in a therapeutic manner with individuals who are suicidal, psychotic, emotionally and/or psychologically disturbed, and/or are impaired due to substance abuse or addiction.
  • Ability to obtain certification in CPR/First Aid and complete training in the Mandt System, Blood Borne Pathogens & HIV/AIDS within the first month of employment.

  • Completes assessments for voluntary and involuntary clients under the Marchman Act, which include Ex-Partes, Physician Certificates and Protective Custody (LEO). This task requires mastery of DSM-5, substance abuse and mental health diagnoses, and the skills to gather background history/information from clients and petitioners.
  • Conducts solution-focused brief therapy (problem solving, goal planning, self-esteem, interpersonal skills, anger management, etc.) individually and in a group setting; coordinates family meetings as needed.
  • Complete required admission, treatment planning, and discharge documentation. Begin formulating discharge plan with client’s input upon first day of admission; link client to appropriate referrals and community resources; review discharge plan with client upon discharge.
  • Develop and update treatment plans in regards to precipitating events of each individual client.
  • Monitors clients’ progress, using the guidelines consistent with their status, with face-to-face contact.
  • Coordinate transportation for clients, at times transport clients in an SMA vehicle in order to execute linkages identified on service plan.
  • Maintains a complete roster of community services and develops professional relationships within the behavioral health system and with resources in the community.
  • Ensure that all services provided to the client are documented in the electronic health record (Avatar) for the client in accordance with all governing standards established by CARF, Medicaid, DCF and SMA. Functions as the lead clinical staff for the clients on their case load by providing direction for each client’s treatment team, and ensuring the best possible clinical outcome.
  • Provides crisis intervention services with other treatment team members, on behalf of and in service to clients that may not be assigned to their caseload.
  • Conducts and/or attends meetings as required; staffing meetings; clinical psychiatrist meetings; case consultations, etc.
  • Communicates verbally and in writing with the public, other service agencies, police, schools, etc. Conducts education and informational presentations in the community, when assigned.
  • Takes appropriate action to ensure provision of exceptional and comprehensive services.
  • Receives and forwards client complaints to the appropriate supervisor and advocates for exceptional and comprehensive services for all clients.
  • Serves as a liaison with the community and other service agencies.
  • Prepares and/or presents required reports. Attends and participates in meetings and in-service trainings as required.
  • Assists verbally and/or physically abusive or aggressive clients in adherence to the Mandt System.
  • Participates in staff development and is responsible for knowledge concerning current information in the area of behavioral health treatment.
